Costs you can’t avoid

You can shop around or do it yourself on many parts of a funeral, but here are three costs you cannot avoid.

  1. Registration of a Death: The Queensland Government’s Births, Deaths and Marriages register requires all deaths that occur in the state to be registered. The registration is free, but if you want a certificate (which you’ll need to get money out of the deceased person’s account etc.) then the government charge a fee of $52.60
  2. Reserve a burial plot: Cairns Regional Council charges fees to reserve a plot for a burial. This costs $995 for an adult grave site. This is necessary even if you reserve the site only a day before you do the burial. For this money you will own that grave site for ever.
  3. Grave opening and closing fee:  Cairns Regional Council charges a fee to prepare and close the grave at the time of burial. This cost is $1,115.

Of course, if you are going with cremation, the Cairns Regional Council burial fees do not apply.
