Where to store your will

Locker safe Deposit Box in a numbered bank, to keep valuable secrets.

There are no official requirements for storing wills and no central database to register your will. Your will is completely useless if nobody can find it when you die.

People often store their will by:

  • Giving a certified copy (or the original) to relevant friends or family. This is not helpful if you don’t want them to know what’s in your will while you are alive
  • Leaving the original with a lawyer and telling relevant friends and family which lawyer to contact when they need to access the will
  • Storing the original will at home somewhere safe, but somewhere that other people can easily find it when they need to. This is risky in the case of a house fire or cyclone
